As the world holds its breath, waiting to see what action will be taken to end the conflict in Syria, we’ve broken down the latest updates. Straight news, no nonsense.
John Kerry Cites Clear Use of Chemical Weapons
US Secretary of State, John Kerry, has said that the use of chemical weapons in last week’s attack near Damascus was undeniable and that the Obama administration would hold the Syrian government accountable for this “moral obscenity”. This has been the strongest indication, so far, from the US that they will be directly involved in some form of military action against Syria.
President Obama has made it clear that he does not want “US boots on Syrian soil”, so the question remains, what form of intervention will the US provide?
No Russian Support
Throughout the conflict in Syria, Russia has remained Syria’s most powerful ally. Russia has been Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s key arms dealer and ally and despite near irrefutable evidence that Assad’s government was responsible for last weeks chemical attacks, which killed hundreds of people, including children.
An international peace conference was meant to take place, but Washington postponed the talks due to the current situation and Russia publicly said it “regrets” this decision. The underlying diplomatic tensions between Russia and the US is becoming ever more present. While there isn’t a second Cold War occurring, there is definitely hard frost between the two superpowers.
Syria’s Plan of Attack
Syria’s Foreign Minister has said Syria will defend itself against any US attacks by “all means necessary”. Walid al-Moallem made the foreboding statements earlier today as Syria and the rest of the international community, wait to see what is going to happen.
Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister said that an attack on Syria would trigger “chaos in the entire world”.
